Understanding Evapotransperation (ET), the Irrigation Index and Watering Cycles

Here is your custom schedule

The annual Intermediate Schedule includes:

  • How long to water each zone
  • The number of cycles per runtime
  • The monthly percent adjust and number of days per week to water (use either the current Irrigation Index, which is , or the percentages listed in the table).

The sprinkler schedule compares current watering needs to the average "peak" watering period (the time of year when days are longest and weather hottest, and the Irrigation Index is 100%). Most new automatic sprinkler clocks/controllers have a "percent adjust" feature that allows for simple adjustments to the monthly runtime schedule.

This schedule uses historical weather averages, but does not factor in rainfall. Ask a sprinkler contractor to install a rain sensor to automatically turn the system off when it rains. Contact savingwater.org to see if you qualify for a rebate.
